Within Grain Exhibition Statement:
A deep respect for the land permeated the teachings and experiences exchanged during my stay as a learner, teacher and friend of the beautiful Stoney Nakoda people of the Alberta Rocky Mountains. This painting series explores the interconnectedness of the created world, blurring the lines between the medium and the message in incorporating the woodgrain of the panel into the composition. As the Creator guides our steps, the grain of the fir nudges my brushwork and shapes the painting of the animal or landscape with the leading of natural contours. The preservation of Canadian wilderness is an ever-present stimulus in my work. As I dance between the positive and negative spaces within each composition, the allusive transition between animal, line and wood speaks to the vulnerability of our wild spaces.
